The gardai tell us that many break-ins are opportunistic and that a large percentage don’t even need a forced entry – the burglar goes through an open window or uses the keys that are left under the door mat.  Sometimes the intruder even enters through the unlocked back door when you are upstairs.

Other burglaries are often carried out by a rogue tradesman who searches for such an opportunity.  Be wary of cold callers that offer to clean your windows or clear your guttering.  Genuine tradesmen would have no problem providing you with ID or a business card and you can check them out before you allow them to enter your home.  Getting an Intercom System fitted is a good way of checking who is at the door before you open it.

Don’t be fooled by a leaflet or business card that only has a mobile phone number on it and no address – anyone can have these printed up very inexpensively.  When you need work done it is better to use someone who has been recommended to you rather than someone who calls to your door.

It is easy to become complacent so keep the following tips in mind:

1. Don’t leave spare keys under the flower pot or door mat – this is the first place a burglar will look.
2. Don’t label your keys – you are potentially helping an intruder determine how to gain entry to your home.
3. External security lights are a good deterrent.
4. Ask for identification from cold callers, and check it is legitimate.
5. Lock your doors behind you when you enter your home.  This includes the back door when you come in from the garden.
6. Lock all doors and windows when you leave the house.  Have deadlocks fitted on external doors – and ensure you use them.
7. Don’t leave your keys in the hall beside your front door – this is the first place an intruder will look.  Take car keys upstairs with you at night time.
8. Use timers on internal lights when you are out.  It is also possible to fit timers to stereos or televisions.
9. If you are going on holiday, cancel any milk/paper deliveries and have a family member or neighbour collect your mail so it doesn’t obviously overflow.
10. Consider an alarm or CCTV for home security.

Quite a lot of home owners are now installing a text dialler or voice dialler as an addition to their alarm systems, this negates the need for central monitoring on your alarm. For homes dome Cameras are normally the preferred choice of camera and are normally installed on the soffit of the house, however most dome cameras are 3-axis and can be mounted flat on the house if required. When choosing a CCTV camera it is important to choose one that has an adjustable lens, this will enable you to choose your desired view from your camera, if you opt for fixed lens camera it will be cheaper but once the camera is mounted you will not be able to adjust the view of the camera.

Unlike other CCTV Systems, the Apollo DVR can be easily connected to your existing broadband and remotely viewed through its unique PSS software or the Internet Explorer Website Interface. If you are unsure how to set up your broadband router, Google “portforward” and the router name and you should get instructions. Alternatively call a reputable CCTV supplier, most will be only too glad to help.

You normally need to check that an app exists that is compatible with your CCTV system but because the Apollo DVR has its own unique App called DMSS and is free of charge you won’t encounter a problem. You can download the app by keying in DMSS on your iPhone. Some apps claim to be universal, however this is not always the case. As such, it is always best to use an app that is recommended by the CCTV manufacturer. The app should allow the user to monitor and adjust the CCTV cameras although you will need an optical zoom function on the actual CCTV camera to do this.

Setting up an app is not always straight forward. You will need your IP address as well as passwords, port numbers and other technical information. The specifics may not be known by the user, so being able to get technical assistance for the app is crucial. This may be provided through the manufacturer of the app directly or through your CCTV provider. With the Apollo DVR DMSS iPhone App you simply enter your IP address and give the account a name e.g. Home or Work etc, that’s it you’re done.

The best app will be one that works well on both wireless and cellular networks. When away from the office, you will not always be on a wireless network. This may be a time when viewing the CCTV footage is essential. If the app will not run or functions poorly over a cellular network, it is not going to be the most useful program. The Apollo DMSS iPhone App will take a little longer to connect over the 3G cellular network but still provides more than adequate viewing facility.

Before investing in a new CCTV System it is essential to check out what broadband levels are specifically required to operate the CCTV System from a remote location and also check your current broadband speed levels, this will save a lot of pain down the road. With the Apollo DVR you will need a minimum upload speed of.5 MB but 1 MB will allow you obtain superb functionality from your CCTV System in a remote location.

Studies have shown that CCTV Systems are very effective at deterring anti social behaviour.   These studies have found that car parks are one of the main beneficiaries of a CCTV system, and results in a 51% decrease in crime.  Similarly, introducing a CCTV system onto public transportation results in a 25% decrease in crime.  The areas least affected were open public spaces as many people thought that the cameras would not be able to catch an accurate picture of them in the act.
